
On Sunday, the Aligarh police and the Meerut unit of the Special Task Force claimed that three local youths had killed the Aligarh Muslim University student Mazhar Nayeem on September 16, while snatching a cell phone from him.
They were allegedly trying to loot a mobile set from the Mazhar, BSc second-year student in AMU, and when the clash erupted between looters and the student the trio killed Mazhar Nayeem and escaped from the site.
The police have said that they recovered a country-made gun, motorcycle with number plate UP81K-4583 and the looted mobile set from their possession.
City SSP Raghuvir Lal told media persons that three youths, named as Ashraf, Sadiq and Tariq, have already confessed to having killed Mazhar Naeem. Mazhar, hit on the head with a blunt weapon by the trio, had a C-100 Samsung cell phone with him. The looters struck Mazhar when he tried to resist them. As he collapsed bleeding, they all escaped with the cell phone.
On September 16, when Naeem’s death had caused violence on the AMU campus and protesting students had ransacked several offices. They even had set afire the Vice-Chancellor’s residence. Later, the university administration decided to close the university for indefinite period of time.
According to the police, all the three accused are the residents of Jeevan Garh locality, that is located near the campus area. The trio have accepted that they had no intention of killing Naeem.
