For the first time, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union has been colored in complete red by going totally in ultra-left mood. The All India Students’ Association, the students’ wing of the CPI(M-L) Liberation, which has been active on the campus for the past 15 years, registered victory on all the four key posts in the ventral panel of JNU student union.

Sandeep Singh was elected as president; Shephalika Shekhar as vice-president; Pallavi Deka as general secretary and Mobeen Alam as joint secretary for this year central panel in JNU student union. It was ‘Lal Salam’ that waved the campus on Sunday. It has happened for the first time since 1989 that no one from the Students’ Federation of India-All India Students’ Federation combine (SFI-AISF) won a single seat in the student union.

This year election was a booster for the Youth for Equality (YFE) that made the debut in JNU student politics in last year. The candidates of YEF gave a tough fight to the Left-backed parties this year. YEF candidates for the post of president and general secretary managed to get second place by pushing SFI-AISF candidates to the third spot.

On the great performance of AISA in JNU student politics, Sandeep Singh said:

It is a mandate for the rights of students and workers. A mandate against the casteist forces, against land grabbing in the name of special economic zones, against displacement in the name of development, against draconian laws of the country, against the Indo-US nuclear deal and the United Progressive Alliance Government.

Sandeep Singh, general secretary in the outgoing students union, secured 1,218 votes to be comfortably elected president by defeating Babita Sharma of the YFE, who polled 924 votes. AISA’s Shephalika Shekhar elected as vice-president received 1,077 votes. Pallavi Deka of the AISA received 1,029 votes to become general secretary and Md. Mobeen Alam of the AISA managed to win the poll by defeating SFI-AISF candidate by 38 votes.
