Army official worth Rs 50 crore lands in CBI net

Major General Anand Kumar Kapoor, who is said to be in the race to become the Director General of Ordnance Corp, has found his feet in CBI net for accumulating disproportionate assets in his name. According to the report, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted initial investigations and even registered a disproportionate asset case against the serving Major General and his wife.

On Wednesday, the CBI started conducting raids, after registering the FIR against him, at as many as 12 places across the country. N.R. Wassan, joint director, CBI, said that searches have been carried out in Delhi, Jaipur, Shimla, Gurgaon and Mumbai. He even gave an unclear indication that the army officer could be accumulated assets worth over Rs 50 crore. This was being said as one of the biggest-ever raids conducted against a senior defence official in the country.

According to the report, CBI had carried out the raids at several places till late on Wednesday. The raids disclosed number of properties in the name of Kapoor and his wife other than those properties already mentioned in the FIR.

The report said further that the CBI team recovered even 50 liquor bottles, a tiger skin and a bear skin from Kapoor’s Sainik Farms house in Delhi. The CBI may book General Kapoor under the Wildlife Protection Act in case if the CBI did not fine the requisite documents during the raids.

The CBI team has recovered documents of 12 properties in Delhi, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Shimla and Mumbai. The team has also recovered fixed deposits worth Rs. 1.3 crores, 4 lockers full of jewellery, Rs. 6 lakh cash from home, Rs. 40 lakh in bank accounts and 12 credit cards. Kapoor also owns an under construction double storey building in Defence Colony in Delhi.

On the other hand, Defence Minister AK Antony has accepted that the ministry was aware of the CBI raids carried out against General Kapoor. He also said that strict action would be taken against corrupt officers.

However, another report claimed that the recent raids might be the result of Kapoor’s claim in the race to become the Director General of Ordnance Corp that is considered to be a respected and valued posting in Indian Army. General Kapoor is posted in the South Western Command in Jaipur at present. He was awarded the Vashist Seva Medal for his services to Indian Army.
