
The Election Commision has announced the date of Assembly polls in three states, Punjab, Uttaranchal and Manipur. Punjab has 117 assembly seats, Uttaranchal has 70 and Manipur has 60 assembly seats.
The Elections for the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly will be held in three phases and scheduled to be held on February 8, 15 and 23 in 2007.
On the other hand, Punjab will go for Assembly polls on February 13 and Uttaranchal will go for Assembly polls on February 21 respectively.
The by-elections for the Amritsar Parliamentary seat, vacated by resigning of Navjot Singh Sidhu, will also happen on February 13. However, the counting of votes will take place on February 27.
Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami has said that
as the dates of poll schedule have been announced, the model code of conduct has been come into force in Manipur, Uttaranchal and Punjab with immediate effect.
Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in the polling in all the three states.
Gopalaswami also said that the sensitive polling stations will be gone for polling under the digital cameras and there would Commission would be posting its observers in various constituencies.
