The Indian doctor Mohammad Haneef finally walked free after a nightmare of more than 20 days. On Friday, the Australian court dropped all charges related to his alleged involvement in severe terror act against Haneef.
The Australian Police had detained him for more than three weeks in the connection with the failed UK terror plot. On Friday, the Commonwealth prosecutors decided to withdraw all the charge of supporting a terrorist organisation against Haneef.
The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions Damian Bugg had also reviewed the case in the wake of growing pressure from India as well as from civil rights group for fair trail. Then, the Australian court decided to drop all the charges against him.
Haneef walked free when the red-faced Australian Federal Authorities dropped all charges because of no strong evidences. They later released him on some conditions. When heard the news of dropping the charges, Haneef said in emotional voice: Inshallah. I am grateful to God and to all those who supported me,
However, Haneef would be in residential detention and he would stay at his home on the Gold Coast and he can move freely in a said area till his visa clearance by Immigeration minister Kevin Andrews. The Gold Coast hospital has offered him his own job where he worked as a registrar before his arresting.
The government of India has asked the Australian government to clear the visa matter for Haneef’s arrival to India as soon as possible. Haneef’s case has caused a huge embarrassment to PM John Howard’s federal government because of the overenthusiasm showed by the AFP to prove Haneef as guilty in the foiled terror attack.
Update: According to recent report, the Australian government has given him the permission to leave the country and cleared his visa. At the same time, the government has refused to reinstate his work visa in Australia.
Now, Haneef would fly out of Australia tonight with his Lawyer Peter Russo. Peter said that the fight to have Haneef’s Australian work visa would continue in Australia
