Australian uranium export to India goes under uncertainty

The dark clouds over the future of Indo-US nuclear deal are now ready to ruin UPA government joy of success again, this time for another cause. The government had planned to sign an Uranium export deal with Australia during the meeting of PMs of both countries.

Now, Australia’s plan to export uranium to India has reportedly gone in trouble. The report has confirmed the doubts in the deal before the scheduled meeting of PM Manmohan Singh with Australian PM to discuss the yellowcake shipment.

On Wednesday, Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has given a warning that no uranium would be exported to India until the conclusion of the agreement between the US and India on nuclear power.

On Tuesday, the national security committee of cabinet in Australia had taken the decision to export uranium to India. The conditions were the successfully completion of the Indo-US nuclear deal first and the agreed safeguards.

According to the Australian, Downer said that Australia would wait for the signing of a US-India pact for transferring civilian nuclear fuel and technology to India before taking any decision of exporting Australian uranium to India.

In India, the matter has been taken a political turn and the ruling UPA alliance is looking in minorities in this matter. The left parties have decided to join other opposition parties against the nuclear deal in India. On the other hand, the US State Department has confirmed that an Indian atomic test might ruin the nuclear deal.

The opposition Labour Party In Australia has also asked the government to review the pending decision to sell the uranium to India.

Opposition foreign affairs spokesman Robert McClelland said that India won’t rule out nuclear testing in future and Australia has its own several international treaty obligations. The Australian government should uphold its own obligation.

India is not a signatory country to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and Australia has signed the NPT. There are some fears in Australia that uranium for Indian power plants may be diverted for military purposes.
