Is this a sign of ongoing tussle between two power blocs within the Bhartiya Janta Party? Leader of opposition and prime ministerial candidate from the party, Lal Krishna Advani, has reportedly planned to launch a ‘Parivartan Yatra’ in the country but before his yatra, the party president Rajnath Singh has launched another yatra - ‘Kisan Yatra’.
Two yatras at the same time indicates all is not going well within India’s main opposition party.
For Advani, the politics of rath yatras is the best way to re-establish the lost connection with the voters across the country and he is planning to start another ‘yatra’ in the country before the General election.
Clearly, he is intended to hit the road to prepare party workers across the country for the next Lok Sabha elections and political managers in the party are busy in preparing the plan for Advani’s yatra.
On Thursday, Rajnath Singh launched his two-day ‘Kisan yatra’ by visiting Vidarbha region in Maharashtra for drawing attention to the problems faced by farmers. He started off his tour after paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Sewagram Ashram in Ahmedabad. He wrote in the visitor’s diary - ‘Gandhi is still relevant for India’ - and began his ‘Kisan Yatra.’
He blamed the UPA government for neglecting the farming sector and promised to improve the farmers’ condition if it came to power. He said if the party assumes power in centre, farmers will be granted farm loans from cooperatives and nationalised banks at four per cent interest with no repayment in the first year.
Rajnath Singh’s yatra has given indication; it seems, to the party officials that he is not much involved in the preparation of Advani’s yatra. Just ahead of General Election, it is certainly not a good sign for future of the party.
