Bihar is being transformed under the governance of Nitish Kumar. Bihar is expecting to jump 100% in allocation for higher education. In the last budget Bihar had received Rs 2600 crore and this year the state is expecting to get Rs 5,500 crore.
Moreover, Bihar is all set to get one of the three new IITs planned by the 11th Planning commission.
In the last 60 years, Bihar had continuously demanded for an IIT. The site for the IIT is yet to be finalized. The minister of state for HRD M A A Fatmi wants this institution in his constituency in Darbhanga.
However, because of lacking of infrastructure needed, Darbhanga might not get the institution. It would be probably located anywhere near Patna. The second IIT come up in the Telengana region of Andhra Pradesh most likely in Medak.
After the formation of Jharkhand, there was no any national institute left in Bihar. Earlier, the report says that Bihar Institute of Technology, Sindri, was to get converted into an IIT. But the government of India had set up another IIT in Kharagpur.
The Union minister M A A Fatmi said that
another proposal of granting Central university status to one university of the state is also under consideration.
An expenditure of Rs 600 crores would be incurred for establishing IIT institute while Rs 150 crores would be spent for opening IIIT institute.
