Campaign for Sanjay Dutt, Why?

The Press is said to be the fourth pillar of democracy in India. It actually works under the constitutional rights given to the citizen of India ie ‘Freedom of speech and expression’. Indian system of governance has a good ‘checks of balances’ way to restrict the other organs of the government (Judiciary, legislative, Executive) from crossing their limits.

Openly showing people’s view by media against the sentence awarded to Sanjay Dutt by the special TADA court is hurting some other section of society who lost their relatives in the blast. For them, there is no any difference between Sanjay Dutt and any other people who have been sentenced in the 93′ Mumbai blast case.

Sanjay Dutt was found guilty under arms act by the Tada court and the court awarded him six years of RI in jail. People (mostly from Bollywood) have started offering their own view-points that Sanjay Should have been given less term of sentences and the sentence is too harsh on him etc.

This is not good because Dutt has been proved guilty with other 100 convicts under the 14-year long trial. Just because he is a celebrity and more than 100 crore is in trouble, he should be given less sentence, is nothing but a useless talk.

Just think about the people, who were sole bread earner in their families and have been awarded sentences in the same offence. No body is there to talk about him and so many people are there to talk about Dutt to get cheap popularity in the country through media.

Those people are doing nothing but creating more problems for Dutt and indirectly forcing a section of people to go against Dutt. There is a piece of advice to the people who have started signing campaign for Sanjay that let Dutt go with all available legal routes to be out of jail as soon as possible.

Priya Dutt is on right way and she is looking for every option available for his early release. Making such a unnecessary hue-n-cry against the sentence awarded to Sanjay Dutt would definitely irked the judiciary and that would create problem for themselves too. The move has started causing anger in those people who believe the sentences were much deserved.

Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said:

If someone starts such a campaign criticizing the order of the court (before the prisoner seeks relief), it certainly amounts to contempt of court. I am watching the events carefully and if this continues, I will be forced to take legal action.

Eminent jurist Soli J. Sorabjee has justified the 6-year jail sentence for Sanjay Dutt and said that there is no system of any ‘celebrity justice delivery system’ in this country. A sentence less than five years to Dutt would have been illegal as he was convicted for a ’serious offence’.

So, let the judiciary do its own work and one should avoid creating unnecessary pressure on it.
