The UPA government has showed its greater concern over the poor quality of higher education in the country on several occasions. The government has started taking necessary steps to put the higher education on the right path.
Now, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has Okayed the proposal for making the evaluation of colleges and universities compulsory at regular interval. The PMO has asked the Union HRD Ministry to make the plan to work out the proposal.
Earlier, the HRD Ministry has revealed through the National Accreditation & Assessment Council (NAAC) survey that 90 per cent of colleges and 68 per cent of universities in the country were of medium to poor quality.
After ten days of the report, the PM himself has taken note of the degrading quality of higher education in India. According to the report, the HRD Ministry had planned for the allotment of Rs 77,779 crore to improve the quality of this sector in the 11th Five Year Plan.
Now, the PM has indicated that the common assessment and accreditation will be one of the pre-conditions for granting the funds to the colleges and universities. Previously, the NAAC was responsible to grant grades to the Universities but now the HRD ministry would likely to select any other agency to do the assessment survey.
