New Delhi was hopeful to get the status of host city for the Asian Games, 2014 but the majority in 45-member General Assembly decided South Korea’s Incheon city as the winner to host the Asiad 2014 by secret voting. South Korea will be hosting the Asian games second time in last 12 years.
The OCA chief Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahd al-Sabah did not disclose the number of votes received by Incheon city in the ballot among the 45-member countries. He said that OCA does not disclose the figure.
Sports minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi and Indian sportsmen Anju Bobby George and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had led Indian delegation for the bid. The team was looking dejected and they never knew what went wrong in India’s bid.
It is being said about the reason to lose the race that India has less experience in hosting big games and the country was banking only on the 1982 Asiad and the 2010 Commonwealth Games. However, South Korea has hosted so many big games in the recent past.
On the other hand, Kalmadi said that Indian bid was looking divided actually because of the Sports Minister’s comments came in media. Sheikh Ahmad said that the bid was very close and both the countries have weak points as well as strong points. But on the marketing point of view, Korea had the edge over India.
