On Thursday, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat said, while delivering speech on the occasion of October Revolution day celebration in Kolkata, that the Communist parties in Indian politics was determined to oppose the strategic alliance between India and the United States because the growing relation between India and US might be aimed to counter China’s dominance in the subcontinent.
According to him, the US wants to make India its strategic ally just to counter China that is the most powerful socialist country because China is fully capable of challenging the might of the USA.
After reading his statement, anybody can raise a question that which country is important for the leaders of left parties, India or China? Do they represent China’s voice in Indian politics? It seems there is no need for China to say anything direct to India because Indian communist parties are here to complete the responsibility.
No one can ask any question to the left leaders regarding the border problems with China. These questions generally place them in an awkward situation. The main opposition party BJP has raised serious questions against over nationalist credentials of CPM leaders by saying that Karat’s comments on China clearly showed that China’s interests are supreme for Indian Communist party.
BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: The comments of Prakash Karat finally exposes the sheer duplicity of the CPM and establishes once and for all that for it the interests of China are primary and India’s interests were only secondary to them.
Prasad further said that the double standard is more than apparent now. He asked Karat to come out with an explanation whether the US capital, which is coming to Kolkata, loses its imperial colour after investment in the Left-ruled state.
Prasad also told media persons that it was the pro-Chinese thinking that had prompted the undivided Communist Party of India to watch silently from the sidelines and ‘back’ the Chinese invasion into Indian Territory in 1962.
The Indian communists have opposed the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal when it reached in the last stage of its completion now. On the day when the CPM Politburo rejected the 123 agreement and threatened the UPA government to snap the critical support in the house because of the ongoing process on the nuclear deal, the Chinese communists launched the first nuclear power plant in northeastern China as the beginning of a major plan to build 31 nuclear reactors by 2020.
According to the report, China has been started the construction at the Hongyanhe power plant off the Dalian coast of six 1000-MW reactors for an estimated $6.5 billion. The first unit would probably start the power generation in next five years and the power generation in rest of the reactors would start by 2014. China has its nuclear deal in place to get the capacity to generate 40,000-MW nuclear power by 2020 with the help of its fuel supplies agreement with Australia.
China, as of now, produces just above 8500 MW power from its 11 reactors and India is slightly behind with 4000 MW power generation form its reactor those are currently facing fuel shortage. China has planned to add at least reactors per year till 2020 in the list of reactors to enhance the rapid economic growth in the country. It has planned to have 150 nuclear reactors by the end of 2050 that would produce 150,000 MW of power. For that plan, China has already placed orders to buy four Westinghouse reactors from US.
When the communist China is taking the help of the US to enhance its nuclear capacity, why the Indian communists have so much ideological problems with India-US nuclear deal? When China may take US support in nuclear field why the Indian communists are opposing the Indo-US nuclear deal?
