Mahatma Gandhi had written a letter on January 19, 1948, that is being said as his last letter before his assassination. Now the letter is on sale at the famous auction house Christie’s in London. The auction house has put the letter at auction as the part of some manuscripts. The date for the auction has been fixed for July 3.
Thomas Venning, specialist with Autographs, Letters and Manuscripts for Christie’s, said that Gandhi’s letter is great. The letter was written three week before he died.
He said:
The letter was all about the issue effectively that killed him. A Hindu fanatic killed him, because he had urged to take moderate policy toward Muslims in India.
This is a manuscript for his journal, in which he’s urging moderation towards the Muslim population of India.
According to the report, the Ministry of External Affairs has asked the Indian High Commission in Britain to negotiate with auction house to get the letter or to buy the letter before the auction date July 3.
Deputy High Commissioner of Indian Embassy in UK, Ashok Mukharjee said:
The High Commission has negotiated with the auction house. They told us that they are interested to contact representatives of the owners of this letter.
On the other hand, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Rajmohan Gandhi has said on this matter that he has no idea about this issue. He said further that Gandhi’s letters belonged to India’s Navjeevan Trust Publication.
According to the report, the trust is not doing anything in this matter because this is a big proprietary issue and it would take time to solve the issue.
Christie’s reaction on the matter was as;
...the auction will take place on Tuesday and it’s open to public. We have no other reaction.
Gandhi’s letter is actually a part of a rare collection of more than 100 handwritten manuscripts that was named as the Albin Schram Collection of Autograph Letters. The approximate value of the letter is about £ 12,000.
