
The Gujarat government has decided to approve the draft Bill for establishing up a Gujarat petroleum university in the knowledge corridor zone near Gandhinagar.
The cabinet has decided to introduce the bill in the coming Assembly budget session with a separate law for the university.
As it will be the first University of its kind in the country. It would start it functioning most probably from the next academic year, July 2007.
The Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) would work as the nodal agency for this University. There will be a board of governors comprising private, national as well as international players from the oil as well as gas sector.
Although, the Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI) Gandhinagar is already offering the post-graduate diploma course in petroleum management.
The new Petroleum University would introduce various technical courses from July. The University would get its newly constructed building in the GERMI campus.
According to the report, BE (petroleum energy) and B Tech degree courses would be introduced at the university, and also the PG diploma course in petroleum management being offered at the GERMI would be converted into an MBA degree course.
In addition there would be five more management courses at graduate, post-graduate and doctorate level along with 16 technical courses will be offered in that University.
The University would offer courses such as petroleum engineering, gas and refinery engineering, pipeline engineering, petroleum exploration and production, petroleum geology and geo-physics, energy and petroleum management.
