The UPA government has received a big jolt yesterday by the Supreme Court on the issue of providing OBC Quota in higher educational institutions. The Supreme Court has put stay on 27% reservation to OBCs in Higher institutions.
The court has asked the government to present the basis and logic behind the decision to grant reservation to OBCs and asked it to behave in a responsible manner.
However, Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh has not taken the Supreme Court’s decision as any setback to the government.
He said that the government would strictly remain to the act reserving 27 percent seats for OBCs in institutes such as IITs and IIMs. He clearly said that on this matter that the government would think to take constitutional steps to continue the quota.
He said:
The quota law was a undisputed decision of the parliament and we would strictly stick on to it. Every single member of the parliament voted in favor of it and let’s see who comes out in the open and speaks against it now.
He said further:
I will do what is constitutionally and legally correct. It was just an interim order and the government has full faith that the Supreme Court would declare the ruling void.
Principle of reservation has been passed by Parliament and the Constitution amendment has already been carried out unanimously. Parliament will stick to it. There are legal objections. We will try to meet them.
Whatever Arjun Singh says, one thing has been very much clear that if the government would decide to take any rigid step on this issue, the country would see another series of protests across the nation. The conflict between Judiciary and legislature is also looking on the card as political leaders are openly terming the court’s decision as illegal, bad and unfortunate.
