Gautam Kumra, the co-author of a report compiled by the global consultancy firm McKinsey, said that India’s pharmaceuticals market is likely to undergo a major revolution in the coming ten years because of the changing lifestyle of many people currently living under the poverty line.
According to the report, about 140 million poor people in India would be able to live better life in the next ten years. The per capita disposable income would touch $765 by 2015 from $463 now because of the rapid growth of Indian economy. Because of achieving higher income, more people would spend more on basic health care.
The pharmaceutical market is likely to grow to $20bn by the year 2015. At present the market is worth of $6.3bn. With this anticipation of growth, India will get a place in the list of top countries with greater market potential. In 2005, India was placed at 14th place and by the end of 2015, the country would possibly overtake other countries such as Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Turkey.
Kumra said that people has heard about acute infections most of the times till the day but now there are more chronic lifestyle diseases such as heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure in the country.
India already is home to the largest number of diabetics in the world and a big number of cardiovascular cases. He also said that the WHO had once said in a report that India will become the world’s capital of heart attack and capital of diabetes and hypertension by 2020.
The pharmaceutical market has also the backing of the aggressive drug marketing and a greater prevalence of health insurance in India. With these realities, India will be a very important market for pharmaceutical companies in coming days.
