India is currently facing foodgrain shortage as it was never before. The wheat production has been declined in last some years. The Prime Minister, himself, taken initiative to counter the shortage of wheat in country.
The Indian government has started a new Rs 841 crore project at the Indian Council for Agricultural Research. To expand the area under wheat cultivation will be the main aim of this project.
According to the agriculture minister,
India has imported 55 lakh MT wheat in the current year. We have to increase grain production by using scientific means.
He has also asked the bankers to extend cooperation to the farmers.
On the other hand, ITC, Godrej and Bharti are also concentrating to this field with huge agro investment plans. They are planning to grow grains for exports and to create farm fresh retail chains across the country.
But this is a fact that mere entry of corporate houses in the agricultural field would not work for India’s food security.
The government has made plan to increase wheat production but the same kinds of projects are needed for the other food grains too.
The foodgrain production has stuck between 180 and 190 million tonnes in the last ten years. However, the demand is growing @ of 2.5 per cent per year.
The big corporate houses may be called as the main culprit behind the food grain crisis too. The farmers are selling their productions to MNCs such as Cargill, Reliance and ITC who offered them a better price.
On the other hand, by the influence of the MNCs, the farmers are concentrating on export-oriented in its large-scale farms.
Now, the government is in mess and how to grow more food grains is a bigger question for it.
