In a practice to restrict the greenhouse gas emissions, India has started looking seriously to other options of power generation and it dramatically increased its reliance on the development of nuclear energy in past some years. India has decided to take necessary steps to restrict the global warming but the neighboring country China’s dependency on coal binge still going on.

According to a report published by the International Atomic Energy Agency, India is likely to increase nuclear production eight-fold by the end of year 2030. India’s nuclear power production would account for 26 percent of its power grid in the country.

At the same time, China has planned to use only 4 percent of nuclear energy for electricity generation by 2030. The IAEA has estimated that there’ll be decline in nuclear energy from around 15% in 2006 to 13% in 2030.

Alan McDonald, a nuclear-energy analyst with the IAEA, said:

The other countries of the world should encourage China to get out of coal energy production into non-greenhouse gas emitting energy production for the sake of restricting global warming.

The Pew Center for Climate Change says that the coal contributes 20 percent of the total greenhouse gases emitted on earth. Coal is a dirty, carbon-dioxide spewing energy source, but it is cheap, scalable and reliable like gasoline.

Nuclear energy is the sole green alternative to coal with proven capacity. At present, the nuclear power generates 370 gigawatts of energy, the global wind capacity is around 74 GW and solar-power capacity is at only 1.7 GW.

At present, the other true alternative energies such as solar and wind energy are not ready to step up for becoming strong alternative to coal energy in the next 10 to 20 years. The countries across the world would have to build a lot of nuclear plants to restrict the emissions of greenhouse gas.

India has planned to increase nuclear-energy production by at least 9 percent a year till 2050. According to the report, 7 new nuclear reactors are under construction and the government has planned for more reactors in coming days despite a derailed Indo-US nuclear deal.
