
Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Shakeel Ahmad said in the parliament that India is ahead of China and Russia in the information technology (IT) race. According to the Global Information Technology Report, India ranks 40th ahead of China (50th rank) and Russia (72nd).
Further, the Government of India has made a proposal to establish more than one lakh Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enabled Common Services Centers (CSCs) preferably in rural parts of the country.
In another report from Marketplace, the number of people using the Web has grown faster in India than China, Japan and Germany too. India now has the world’s ninth largest online community that is 18 million Web users.
There are a massive opportunities for growth in India. eBay, Yahoo and Google are already ramping up their presence in India to take advantage of the new Web users.

Last time I checked we did not make a penny out of spice trade - the greatest opportunity we ever had. The technology used in Malabar coast to produce spice today is not a whole lot different from 300 years ago. Even Poland - of all the countries - competes with us in producing spices.......But 300 years ago our folks had the same arguement - that we are the best.
