India to join Trans-Asian Railway to boost trade and tourism among Asian countries

India is now ready to connect its railway network with proposed Trans-Asian Railway that would link India with major parts of Asian continent and later to Europe too.

The Union Minister PR Dasmunsi has told to the Chinese news agency Xinhua that India has decided to sign the inter-governmental agreement to formally coordinate the development of the Trans-Asian Railway in the region.

The well-developed Trans-Asian railway would be helpful to boost the rail traffic and would enhance the better trade relation among the Asian countries. The tourism sector of all those nations would also get a better scope to develop itself.

Dasmunsi said further that the nations in agreement would help to develop the railway tracks of international importance connecting itself with different nations. The government of India is planning to form a working group that would suggest the government for the implementation of the agreement.

In April 2006, the proposal for the Trans-Asian agreement was tabled at the United Nations. The UN has allowed the member nations to sign the agreement till December 2008. Till the date, eighteen countries, including Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, Vietnam, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Laos, have been signed the agreement to connect its railway link with proposed Trans-Asian Railway.

According to the agreement, international railway link would enter India at Tamu from Myanmar. It will later go to Bangladesh from Mahisasan. After penetrating Bangladesh, the rail link would enter India again at Gede and would cross India to enter Pakistan from Attari.

Earlier, The proposal was conceived during 1960s to provide a continuous 14,000-km rail link between Singapore and Istanbul. later. at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) session 2006, the agreement was adopted formally.
