India to resume train service to Bangladesh after 36 years

After thirty-six years, India and Bangladesh have decided now to resume cross-border passenger train services. According to the report, the train services would be started between Kolkata and Dhaka probably from the month of September.

The resumption of the train services will be advantageous for the millions of people living in neighboring areas. During the 1965 Indo-Pak War, the train services between India and Bangladesh had been disrupted. However, after 36 years, the resumption of the train services would definitely help the people living in border areas.

The Indian authorities have said that all necessary facilities such as Immigration cubicles, resting rooms and security check units, are well in place to provide needed help and security to the passengers from both countries.

Swapan Mondal, DRM Eastern Railways said:

We are ready with all facilities as far as International train is concerned. Now it is a matter of time for the final announcement when the train will actually start.

The report said that the Kolkata-Dhaka train service will be named as Maitree. The train can transport 308 passengers in one visit. Tickets on the train would depend on the class and it would range between Rs 320 rupees to Rs 800.

As far as the bilateral relation with Bangladesh is concerned, the resumption of the train services would open a new way of cooperation between both countries. India has started taking necessary steps in this direction. On economic front, the government of India has also indicated to allow FDI from Bangladesh.
