After the nuclear test conducted by North Korea, some of senior Indian officials is feared that the development in Korean Peninsula could put India-US nuclear deal at risk.
The foreign ministry spokesperson has issued a statement as,
India is profoundly concerned at the reported DPRK’s nuclear test. This is a clear violation of its international commitments and it may jeopardize peace, stability and security on the Korean Peninsula and in the region too.
The statement further said,
the test highlighted the dangers of undercover proliferation. India is keeping an eye on the situation and is in touch with several countries on this matter.
Former Indian ambassador to US, Lalit Mansingh said that the US Senate may now be compelled to assess it in the context of growing nuclear proliferation. It may be possible that the Senate would exemplify the India-US nuclear deal in the light of North Korean example.
However, India may try to highlight Pakistani link to Pyongyang’s nuclear program and its consequence on security and stability in the region. Government of India has emphasized that any attempt to compare North Korea’s test with India’s nuclear detotanations of 1998 would be absurd.
As soon as North Korea conducted the tests on Monday morning, India talked to various countries including North Korea’s neighboring countries such as China and Japan besides the permanent members of Group of Five.
India also said that North Korea has violated its commitment as a signatory to the safeguards agreement of the IAEA.
