After China, Britain has also extended the support to India to be given a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. According to British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, the British government would enthusiastically support Indian demand for a permanent place in the UNSC.
The report says that Miliband is likely to raise the matter during his speech to the UN General Assembly this week.
Britain is all set to extend its support to India, South Africa, Brazil and Japan to get permanent seats in UNSC. Britain is likely to call for U.N. reforms and expansion of the Security Council to grant permanent seats to these four nations.
During his interview to the BBC Miliband said that UK widely believed that these four countries had an apparent and well-built claim to be represented as the permanent member in the UN Security Council.
He said:
Britain thinks very clearly that the South Africas of this world; the Brazils of this world, the Japans of this world and the Indians of this world have a clear claim.
He indicated during the interview that his speech in the UN would concentrate on the global inequalities and power is one of the inequalities. The induction of emerging power such as India as permanent members in the UN Security Council would be helpful for removing such inequalities in the world.
Earlier, Beijing administration had indicated that China was ready to take Indian initiative for membership of the UNSC in a more cooperative way. China had never said openly either in support of India or against India on the UNSC membership issue. This was being said that China’s positive indication have come out partly because China did not want to give Japan any chance to play bigger role in the United Nations.
