The green signal from the Supreme Court to JM Lyngdoh committee report may create a storm in the galleries of political offices as well as among growing netas who have an eye on students’ union elections across the country.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had constituted a six-member committee headed by the former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh to give its report to regulate the students’ union elections.
The Lyngdoh Committee has come out with the report that-
# Fixes 25 years as maximum age to contest student union elections
# 75 per cent attendances will be compulsory for each candidate
# Only regular/full-time students will contest in University elections
# Expense should not exceed than 5000 Rs
# There should be complete ban on political donations
# There will be a ban on the use of printed posters and hand-made banners
# No outsiders shall be permitted to take part in the election process in any capacity.
There was a need to concentrate on the current situation of Student Politics. The recent brutal killing of Prof H S Sabharwal by students just before the Teacher’s Day has raised many questions against the need of Student Politics and Unions in the Universities.
The lyngdoh committee report says,
political parties in the University Politics are exercising the interference. The primary function of any university is to provide education. There is no need of any kind of political indoctrination in the educational institutions.
