Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati is trying hard to be emerged as national leader for Dalits in Indian politics. For this, it is necessary for her to snatch all ‘political relations’ with Congress party. The Bahujan Samaj Party supports the Congress-led UPA government at centre.
BSP is trying hard to send its message to voters across the country that Mayawati is the single leader who has worked for the welfare of Dalits in her state - Uttar Pradesh.
Her aim has become crystal clear for everyone now; she wants to achieve status of the biggest Dalit leader in the country. She even tried her fate in assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh and successfully received good share in voting percentage in both the states. She has distanced herself from the Bhartiya Janta Party and now she is working hard to keep her party away from Congress also. One can ask what is her aim now?
The aim is clear... when the Left bloc can rule over UPA with about 60 seats in Lok Sabha why can’t she play the same role in next Lok Sabha. She has shown utter confidence in the success of Brahman-Dalit equation in UP and now she wants it to play in next Lok Sabha election. The Congress party has won many general elections in the post-independence era because the same political equation worked in its favor and now Mayawati has snatched it from Congress it seems.
Now, Mayawati is looking in need of a good cause to maintain good distance from Congress. She has accused some Congress leaders of conspiring to eliminate her and threatened to withdraw support to the UPA at the Centre anytime after January 15.
She said:
I see a big conspiracy of the Congress party and seeing its attitude if anything untoward happens to me then the Congress will be solely responsible.
She linked her statement with UPA’s statement in which it had criticized UP chief minister in the wake of the terrorist strike at CRPF camp in Rampur. She also blamed some Congress leaders for ‘patronizing’ expelled BSP MP Atiq Ahmed. She also accused the Centre for deliberately delaying the CBI decision on the disproportionate assets case.
The major question is that - Will Mayawati succeed in achieving her political aim in next General Election and Will the Dalit voters across the country support her as they did in Uttar Pradesh election? If BSP wouldn’t win polls in coming elections, it would definitely play a bigger role to defeat the candidates either from Congress or BJP. Now, another question is here - for which party the BSP has become a real threat?
