
Indian Prime Minister, who is a member of Rajya Sbha from Assam, needs to be re-elected for the parliament before June 14, as his present term will be ended on June 14 this year. He was elected for the third consecutive terms from the same state. On 2001, when he was elected for the third term, he had become Leader of Opposition in the Upper House.
After the 2004 general elections in the country, he got blessings of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and became the Prime Minister of India. Today, Sonia Gandhi went to the PM residence to see him off to Assam for filing his nomination papers seeking re-election to Rajya Sabha.
According to the report, Manmohan would file his papers on Wednesday in Guwahati and the election to the seat would be held on May 24. In his political career, Manmohan Singh has been a Rajya Sabha member since 1991, where he was Leader of the Opposition between 1998 and 2004.
Singh, who is India’s fourteenth Prime Minister is generally acclaimed as a thinker and a scholar. He is the most educated Indian Prime Minister in Indian history. He is the only Indian Prime Minister who never have been elected for the Lower House of Parliament.
