Mulford corrects Rice, says India major player in NAM

The US administration has now praised India’s role in the Non-Aligned Movement. US Ambassador David C Mulford told media persons at the occasion to celebrate American Independence Day:

India has played a major role in the Non-Aligned Movement and continues to do so.

Earlier, US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice had said that the NAM had no relevance now and has been lost the meaning of the movement. She also suggested India should get rid of old ways of thinking acting and moving forward to create a new partnership with US to maintain good bilateral relations. She had said:

There is no apparent contradiction in expanding cooperation and democracy of the world and NAM.

Mulford’s comment has come just one week after the controversy was created by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s call to India to dump NAM and to join US groups.

In India, different political parties and government also had rejected Rice’s remarks The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson had said that the NAM has great relevance in current world in promoting South-South cooperation and the democratization of the international system. India is always committed to its ideas.
