The United States administration has openly expressed its deep concern over the security of nuclear weapons in Pakistan in the wake of declaration of emergency by president Parvez Musharraf. In case of Musharraf’s defeat in the ongoing political war, the nuclear weapons may go in the hands of extremist elements.
On Tuesday, India has also expressed equal concerns on nuke weapons Pakistan has and launched monitoring exercise on the western border for restricting terror activities near border areas. Army chief General Deepak Kapoor said that India is alert against any possible spurt in terrorist activities as fallout of the ongoing political war in Pakistan.
Gen Kapoor said:
The terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir are intact. Infiltration into Indian Territory is being calibrated. There has been a spate of infiltration bids and violent incidents in J&K over the last two months.
An unstable Pakistan is not in India’s interests. The situation in Pakistan is obviously of concern to the security establishment here...we need to closely monitor it.
This is also being said that Pakistan, who is currently fighting with extremists on its western border near Afghanistan to appease US administration, may give free hand to the militants on its eastern border with India.
India is taking the political drama and its consequences seriously and speculating that if there is a strong crackdown on jihadis in Pakistan they may have the options to head towards borders along India. Indian army is, at present, on high alert along the Indo-Pak border.
At the same time, he said that whatever going on was an internal problem of Pakistan, the Indian government wanted to see the return of normalcy and establishment of secular democracy and elimination of terrorism in Pakistan soon.
On the question on the securities of nuke weapons in Pakistan, he said that dirty nuclear bombs falling in the hands of jihadis would be definitely dangerous for all stable countries, democracies and humanity. The terrorists can use anything to start an international conflict.
