The US administration is trying hard to save the civilian nuclear deal signed between India and US. After the inclusion of some additional clauses in the deal, India had started putting its concern to US administration. The India-US civilian nuclear deal has gone at risk to collapse because India is looking determined on demands such as the right to continue testing nuclear weapons.
Earlier, two senior officials of Bush administration had said that India’s demands may ruin the nuclear agreement. According to the report, India is asking for some changes in the deal such as-
# Consent to get uranium-enrichment and plutonium-reprocessing technology from US. U.S. law prohibits sales of these technologies.
# There should be no limit on nuclear weapons test. While the US has told India it may terminate the nuclear cooperation if India would go for another test.
# Consent to reprocess used nuclear fuel from power plants that may turn into bombs.
Now, US President George Bush has reportedly rang up PM Manmohan Singh and assured him about his commitment to the nuclear deal.
If we do believe on experts’ analysis regarding the call came from White House, it shows that US administration is trying hard to soften its stance on some vexed issues on this matter.
Earlier, the political parties such as BJP and Left had staged protest in the Rajya Sabha against the letter sent to PM by US senators on the issue of India’s relation with Iran. After the noisy protest in parliament, India had sent signals to US that the country is not going to compromise on certain issues anymore.
Further, the Monday’s phone call is being seen as US soft stance on the matter and it seems the Bush administration is weighing in on India’s concerns over the new clauses in the deal.
