Ratan Tata may quit after launching 'one-lakh car'

Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata is planning to take retirement from active business life just after completing his dream project - Rs one-lakh car. The project for the dream car has been launched successfully. According to media reports, Tata has said that after launching the small car and making it successful in Indian market, he may take retirement because it would be a nice time for him to exit.

The report further said that the Tata Motors, which is the automotive arm of the more than Rs three-trillion market value group, is likely to unveil the vehicle on January 10 at an auto expo in New Delhi. The Tata’s small is being touted as the world’s cheapest mass-produced car.

However, rival auto companies are not so sure about the safety and emission standards of the ’small car’ at such low price. On the other hand Tata declared:

The Tata Group is launching the car that will be no more polluting than a motorcycle.

He further said:

We are not going to produce millions and millions of such cars and we will not be adding to the carbon footprint on a per-passenger basis. Tata would be one of the most visible faces of the new India in 2008.

In Indian auto market there is a big price gap between the cost of the motorcycle and the entry-level cars like Maruti 800 and Tata is confident to fill the gap.

The major question is that where are roads and parking spaces to add the small cars. The city infrastructure and roads are already facing the rising numbers of cars across the country and the ’small cars’ would probably add more problems to the municipal corporations in four metro cities for sure.

Do we need the ’one-lakh’ car? With concerns for climate change and greenhouse emissions taking center stage across major countries around the world, India is doing what it shouldn’t do by giving the go-ahead for its launch.

The call of the hour is lesser vehicles on roads, and not more of it. The one-lakh car may spell doom to whatever meager efforts we are doing to save the environment.

Ratan Tata should act more of a statesman than a businessman like JRD. It is really a shame that he is pushing so hard for the car.
