Ringxiety, a psychological disorder, on rise among Indians?

Some people have reportedly started complaining about a new kind of psychological disorder, what psychiatrists call ‘Ringxiety’, in which they felt that their phones were ringing or felt it vibrated when it actually didn’t.

According to doctors, at least 25% of all mobile phone users might be hearing false rings. However, no particular study has been done on the prevalence of Ringxiety in India. But, this is being said that Indians, across the country, are being the worst victims of this disorder

Amid the concerns over the excessive of mobile phones by teenagers, the Union health ministry has decided to conduct a study to reveal the impact of too much use of cellular phones on health of young people. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has reportedly started conducting the study across the country.

Five separate centres including PGI, Chandigarh has also started conducting the individual trials in the region. The study is trying to know how mobile phones can cause sleep disorders, memory lapses and hearing impairment in people especially in teenagers.

Union health minister Ramadoss said that the health ministry has planned to conduct the long-term study to disclose the negative effects of cellular phones and mobile towers on people’s health.

He said:

Young kids are using mobile phones and many of them often complain of headaches. The ICMR has started conducting 6he study but it would take at least 10 years to come to any conclusion.

N K Ganguly, director general, ICMR said that some ICMR centres have already started the study in their regions. They would start sending results of the study in the next 4 years time.

Dr Jitender Nagpal, senior psychiatrist at Vimhans said that the cases of behavioural changes caused by excessive mobile phone use has increased by three-fold in the past six years in India.

Until now, no study has clearly said anything absolute on the impact of mobile phone usage on health anywhere across the world. Some studies have reported that the excessive use of cellular phones resulted in headaches, memory loss and even in cancer but the industry claimed each time that the cellular phones are perfectly safe.
