salsa of indian democracy

India is a democratic country, and our country has become role model for rest of the world for successfully establishing democratic institutions in last 60 years. There were some hurdles but the democratic structure was intact and it kept the hurdles away from the roots of democracy. A big section of Indians were illiterate for so long in past but they showed their political understanding time and again since the formation of first popular government in the country in 1952.

Several leaders tried to establish their dominance in national politics and at state-level politics as well but the voters taught a good lesson by uprooting them from even their stronghold areas.

Lalu Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav are the recent examples when voters of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh taught them a lesson for ignoring their rights and development of the state. Political leaders have taken it straight that they can sit in power for five years or ten years but not forever if they would not work for the development of the state or nation.

Voters across the nation completely rejected the ‘India shining’ campaign even after some developmental work done by the Vajpayee-led NDA government at center. Voters in Bihar also showed door to Lalu Yadav even after 15 years of rule of Rashtriya Janta Dal. There are number of examples when the people showed the level of political consciousness to their leaders.

The recently concluded Gujarat assembly election has given an indication to the nation and the indication is something different from the previous ones in nature. In this election, the voters have shown their confidence in Modi’s leadership and his policies for the development of Gujarat. Modi’s landslide victory is actually an example of voters’ political consciousness in Gujarat.

They voted for the development and for Modi’s courage to take tough steps as well. Despite all odds coming his way, Modi proved that people need development after all and if a chief minister would do his job with honesty, he will be re-elected for sure.

Indians are not so illiterate now; India has become the knowledge capital of the world, people know what is wrong and what is right for them, politicians can’t make fool of them. They have the voting rights and they can reject anyone anytime. The old days have gone and now people accept Sonia’s leadership and Modi’s leadership well at the same time for different reasons.

This is the unique specialty of India democracy. There are some political leaders who have said on Modi’s victory that ‘fascists also win election in democracy.’ They should understand that winning 117 seats out of 182 seats in the state is not just a fluke or a result of any special election strategy. It was the result of leaders’ connectivities with voters that’s all. They should keep their mouths shut and respect the people’s mandate. Whatever happens in Indian politics, the salsa of democracy must go on’
