Service sector to create most jobs in Asia-Pacific region: ILO

The service sector is all set to have the greatest potential to create more job opportunities in India in coming days. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has said in a report that the service sector has the potential to outshine all other sectors in creating the job opportunities by 2015. This would also happen with other growing countries in the Asia-Pacific region such as China and others.

According to the estimate, 40.7% of the total employment in Asia-Pacific region will be employed in the service sector. At the same time, the industrial employment would probably go up from 23.1% in 2006 to 29.4% till 2015. the worst part of the story is that the agricultural employment is likely to go down from 42.6% to 29.4% between 2006-2015.

The ILO report, named as ‘Visions for Asia’s Decent Work Decade: Sustainable Growth and Jobs to 2015′ says that the expanding output will not be as much as necessary for creating job opportunities needed to reduce poverty in the region.

The report says that there will be a need to do some serious work to improve the quality of jobs. The quality jobs would ensure that the benefits of Asia’s future economic growth are more equitably distributed.

According to the report, more than one billion people, at least 61.9% of the region’s total workforce, still working in the informal economy without any strong social protection. These jobs are low-productivity jobs. There is no sign of any major decrease in the relative size of the job strength of informal economy by 2015.

Migration is another challenge the region has been facing since long. Millions of workers leave their homes from Asian countries per year to work abroad. The rural-urban migration is another factor why the urban population will be grown up by 350 million. Because of this, the income inequalities between extreme poor and other workers would also go up as well.

India is facing the similar challenges and the policy makers will have to concentrate on the rising inequalities in the country. The low employment opportunities in agriculture sector is a matter of concern and Indian government will have to introduce such policies to make country prepare to tackle the problem in future.
