Shah Jehan's majestic palace, Red Fort, gets listed in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites

Indians everywhere are voting for Shah Jehan’s love monument Taj Mahal to place it among the New Seven Wonders of the World. Now, Shah Jehan’s majestic fort, Delhi Red Fort, has been placed in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

On Thursday, the World Heritage Committee in New Zealand decided to include the Red Fort in the list. Now, Delhi, with Agra, have become the cities with three World Heritage Sites each. Delhi has Humayun’s Tomb and Qutub Minar as other two sites in the list.

According to the report, the 17th century red sandstone monument Red Fort has become the 26th site from India in the list. Before Red Fort, India has already 25 site that have been placed in the list of UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites including Taj Mahal. The Red Fort is the great example of the zenith of Mughal creativity particularly during the era of Shah Jehan.

According to the UNESCO statement released on the inclusion of Red Fort in the World Heritage Sites, the construction of the Red Fort is based on Islamic prototypes. There is a great diversity one can see if one would go with the architectural detail of the construction of the fort. Each pavilion has typical architectural elements of Mughal building that is actually a fusion of Persian, Timurid and Hindu traditions.

The Ajanta and Ellora caves in Maharashtra, Taj Mahal and Agra Fort in Agra, Sun Temple in Orissa, monuments at Hampi in Karnataka and Khajuraho Temples in Madhya Pradesh are some other Indian sites that have been already placed in the list of World Heritage Sites.
