Shyam Saran, former foreign secretary who is presently serving as PM’s special envoy on the India-US nuclear deal, is now looking on the post of the Commonwealth secretary-general. According to the Times of India report, India is considering on Saran’s name to make him India’s candidate for the post.
However, the report has not confirmed yet that the government of India has finally accepted the decision to recommend Saran’s name as India’s candidate for the post. If it happens, saran would join the foreign minister of Malta, Michael Frendo and head of the Commonwealth Business Council, Mohan Kaul who are other candidates for the post.
Earlier, there were some hesitations and the government of India has taken much time to decide whether India should go again for the post of the International organization or not after the UN experience.
Now, India is doing homework on it and now concentrating on its influential skills on the member countries of the Commonwealth. The report says further that South Africa and Bangladesh have given their approval for India’s candidature in Commonwealth but other countries are still being approached by India on this matter.
Shyam Saran, former foreign secretary, has, unlike the Shashi Tharoor, also the full support of Ministry of External Affairs. Tharoor, India’s candidate for the top job in UN, had reportedly no full support from a powerful sections of the MEA. However, Saran is not facing any problem of support from the MEA because he was a part of them.
Moreover, Saran enjoys the stature of a personal favourite of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
