
Ramesh Sippy’s blockbuster is the all time highest grossing film in India. The movie has earned Rs. 2,36,45,00,000 ($60 million) till now. The BBC India had declared the movie as the Film of the Millennium in 1999. In the 50th annual Filmfare awards in India the movie was adjudged as the best film of the last 50 years in India.
The movie, declared as commercial disaster at start, recorded 60 golden jubilees across India. After 35 years of its release, the movie has become more than a movie now. The students are now reading the Sholay’s story in their school textbooks in Madhya Pradesh.
The Students of fifth standard are reading the dialogue and the story of the movie now as a chapter in their textbook. A chapter on films and film making in the book has the story of the film.
The book is designed to help students to develop communication in English language. A student said that they learnt from the story of the Sholay that no one should not go after money.
The teachers are also in the favor of the inclusion of movie as a chapter in the book but parents are showing their displeasure on this issue. They are opposing of the inclusion of the movie in school books.
Now, the BJP government has ordered an inquiry that how the story of the movie included in the test book. The Education Minister, Nirotham Mishra, has his own view point as he said that students might take more after Gabbar Singh than Jai and Veeru, the characters in the movie.
Mishra said that the government has asked to conduct an inquiry on how such an issue could make it to the textbooks. Necessary actions would be taken against whoever is responsible for it.
