Supreme Court gives Cong MP six weeks to prove Indian citizenship

Mani Kumar Subba, Congress leader from Assam has found himself in a unique trouble. He is the Member of Parliament from Tezpur, Assam, but is he Indian citizen or not, is not conformed yet.

Subba’s original name is said to be Mani Raj Limboo and he is facing the allegation that he is a resident of Nepal.

On this matter, the Supreme Court has asked Congress MP to prove that he is an Indian citizen. The court has said him to prove his nationality within six weeks.

Further, the court has also criticized the Central government as well as the CBI for their careless approach into the investigation over the matter of Subba’s nationality.

The Court also showed its annoyance with the affidavits submitted by the CBI. The CBI did not mention Subba’s nationality whether Subba was a citizen of India or Nepal.

The Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, said that

Prima facie it is a serious allegation that the citizenship of an MP is not clear. We have to take a serious view.

According to a report, in 1985, he has refused to get enrolled as an Indian voter in the 17 Central Pendam Assembly segment in Sikkim.

Earlier in December 1997, the CBI had started inquiry into allegations about his nationality. Subba was also entangled in the multi-crore Nagaland State Lottery scam in 1999.
