In the 21st century, India has become the land of revolutions because almost every sector has registered tremendous growth in past 10 years and still these different sectors have long way to go and more to achieve in coming days. The telecom sector is one among such sectors because different telecom operators has added millions of new subscribers in recent past and made India the fastest growing telecom market in the world.

According to the report, the telecom operators in the country have added about 7.80 million wireless subscribers in the month of September only. The user base has gone up to more than 209 million till now in the country.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in a statement that the performance of telecom operators was a little low in September in comparison with the performance registered in August (8.31 million new users) and in July (8.06 million new users). However, the newly added wireless phone subscribers in September were 61% more than the subscriber added in September 2006. The TRAI released the statement on Monday night.

The report said that India has become the fastest growing market for mobile services in the world. The telecom operators have added about 44 million wireless subscribers in past six months. If we count the growth in fixed-line phones with the growth in mobile services in the country, the total telephone subscribers have registered a growth of 46% from the same period in 2006 to 248.7 million.

The TRAI report says further that the total telephone user base in India may cross 500 million users by 2010 when about 22% of India’s 1.1-billion population would own a telephone.

Bharti Airtel, with mobile subscriber base of 48.9 million till September 2007, is India’s largest telecom operator. The Reliance Communications Ltd comes at second place in the list of telecom operators including Vodafone Essar, BSNL, Tata Tele-services Ltd and Idea Cellular.
