The tragedy of India: politicians always win

India experiences another wrestle between politicians and the rest. The Union Health Minister and the leader of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Mr. Anbumani Ramadoss finally has the last laugh.

He surpassed his own standards of thoughtlessness by subverting procedure at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He sacked Mr. P.Venugopal, the director of AIIMS. Ramadoss and Venugopal are at different thoughts on two points -

a) On the question of autonomy of the AIIMS to make appointments.

b) On punishment for the doctors who were on the strike on the issue OBC quota in higher education

This is a sign that the government had given way to the pressures of coalition politics with the Prime Minister preferring to back the PMK minister.

Ramadoss had the upper hand at the 17-member governing body meeting of the institute. The body decided to expel Venugopal on charges that his ‘conduct'’ as head of AIIMS was ‘not satisfactory’. The governing body passed the proposal by a majority of 15-2.

The health minister, himself a doctor, had been engaged in a tug-of-war for control of the institute ever since he joined the Central government. He finally won the battle but a fresh war is certainly going to welcome his decision.

It’s a lasting feeling of pain that hurts terribly
these are the words of Venugopla, the best cardiac surgeon of India. He is associated with the institute for over four decade and horribly waited for the decision in a Nirman Bhawan corridor with no fans for four hours.

Shame on politics.
