A special court in Chandigarh awarded death sentences to two accused, Balwant Singh and Jagdar Singh Hawara, in the connection with the Beant Singh assassination case.

The court also awarded Life term to three other accused, Shamsher Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, in the same case.

On Friday, a special court of additional sessions judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi had convicted six accused and acquitted one person in this case.

The special court found them guilty under the Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

The last accused, Naseeb Singh, has been found guilty under the Explosives Substances Act. He has been let off because he has already spent 10 years in jail.

However, another accused Navjot Singh acquitted by the court in the same case. The court pronounced the conviction order at the high security Burail jail in Chandigarh.

On August 31, 1995, the then Punjab CM Beant Singh and 12 other people were killed in a bomb explosion. The blast had occurred near the Punjab Secretariat when the CM was on the way to Secretariat.

Later, the investigation team revealed that a suicide bomber named as Dilawar Singh who carried out the blast. Now, after seven years of the assassination, the justice has been done in this case.
