UN agency grants additional loan for people living in coastal Tamil Nadu

According to the report, a UN agency, that works to eliminate poverty and hunger from rural parts across the world, has said that it has granted the additional financial support for the people belong to coastal fishing communities in southern part of India. According to it, these people, victims of horrible Tsunami in 2004, are still struggling hard to reestablish their routine life.

The UN agency, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), announced in a written statement that the agency has decided to loan an extra $15 million to the Indian Government just to improve the living condition of people of coastal region in Tamil Nadu. The additional loan would be the part of a broader $68.5 million program sponsored by the IFAD to support various welfare programs in the country.

IFAD President Lennart Bege and India’s Ambassador to Italy, Rajiv Dogra, signed the agreement for the additional loan in Rome. According to the provisions of the program, the people belong to local fishing communities will be provided the insurance services and social security services.

The program would help them to phase out the dangerous fishing gear and practices and to adopt the new technologies for packing, processing and selling fish in coming days.

The UN agency has asked Indian authorities to provide new fish auction halls, sheds, drying platforms and waste disposal facilities for the fishing communities. Another fishing group would be formed to assist 50 village fish marketing associations to sell their stocks on better prices.

The IFAD-sponsored program would also provide training facilities to young people for learning house and boat building. The program would train the youth to start different works other than fishing because fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the region. IFAD’s country manager for India, Mattia Prayer-Galletti said that at least 1,000 people killed in Tamil Nadu each year.
