The International communities such as the United Nations, has started mounting pressure on India and China to take steps against the military rulers in Myanmar. The United States and other members of the UN Security Council have insisted on the governments of India and China to use their influence on the Myanmar rulers to stop attacking on the pro-democratic protests in the country.
The UNSC has also asked the ASEAN countries to take steps to establish democratic setup in their neighboring country Myanmar. The 15-member UNSC has urged India and China to play a vital role to initiate a comprehensive reconciliation process in Myanmar to establish democratic infrastructure by replacing the 45-year old military rule in the Asian country.
However, UNSC members itself were looking in dilemma because the US and Britain supported the idea to send a strong message by backing the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s effort in the matter. On the other hand, China told the council that the pro-democracy protests and government’s action against the monks were an internal issue of Myanmar.
China almost clashed with US and Britain on the question of imposing sanctions against Myanmar and completely rejected the suggestion of any sanctions.
Chinese Ambassador Wang Guangya told the UNSC that the situation in Myanmar has nothing to do with the International peace and security. It posed no threat to the international peace anywhere. He clearly said that any kind of pressure would not help in resolving the problem but it would definitely create mistrust and confrontation for sure. .
The government of India has issued a statement and asked the military rulers in Mynamar to release the Suu Kyi immediately. India also said that the government was closely monitoring the ground situation in Myanmar but the countries such as US and Britain have urged from India to take some strong steps.
The government of India has enjoyed better relations with Military junta in Myanmar in last one decade but here the question is related to the establishments of democratic institutions so, India has applied the ‘wait and watch policy’ in this matter.
