US, EU urge India to use it's influence on Myanmar

On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council failed to build a consensus to condemn Myanmar’s military rulers for using violent means against anti-government protests. Russia and China actually opposed the idea of issuing any condemnatory statement against Myanmar from the UN Security Council in this matter.

However, the UNSC has expressed the need of the UN envoy’s visit in Myanmar as soon as possible. According to the report, the US-EU note has said that Maynmar’s authorities should be ready to receive an early visit by the UN secretary-general’s envoy Ibrahim Gambari to review the situation in the country.

AT the same time, the US and European Union have reportedly mounted pressure on the governments of India and China to use their influence on Myanmar’s military rulers to avoid doing violence against the protesting monks. According to the report, the EU is likely to issue a formal demarche to the governments of India and China in this matter.

Earlier, the joint statement issued by the US and EU said India and China to support them in favor of imposing sanctions against Myanmar. Now, EU nations such as Portugal, Slovenia and the EC may send a demarche to the Indian foreign ministry. However, the US has not planned yet to issue any demarche to India yet.

The US-EU statement condemned the ongoing violence on unarmed monks and students in Myanmar and said:

We call on the authorities to stop violence and to open a process of dialogue with pro-democracy leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi and representatives of ethnic minorities. We urge China, India, Asean and others in the region to use their influence in support of the people of Burma/Myanmar.

On the other hand, the government of India has reportedly told the Myanmar government to avoid doing violence, otherwise it could make the situation out of control. Pranab Mukherjee has said that Indian India wanted the situation resolved through peaceful dialogues.

Mukherjee has told the Myanmar government to opt a broad-based process of national reconciliation and political reform in the country. According to him, Myanmar’s process of national reconciliation that was initiated by the authorities should be accelerated. This is the sole way to end the protests and violence in Myanmar.
