
A Muslim woman from Madhya Pradesh, Jamila, has urged the Human Rights Commission to release her 65-year-old husband from the prison.
The state police had arrested her husband, Shafaque Ahmed Siddiqui, alias Mansoor alias Shafahat, two years ago on May 11, 2005 for allegedly being a citizen of Pakistan.
The police had arrested him for living illegally in Bhopal. According to the report, he had gone to a police station in a drunken state and had shouted several times that he was a Pakistani.
Later, a local court awarded him one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1500. After completion of one year in prison, the Bajaria police, in Bhopal, imprisoned him again in May 2006. It was said that he would be deported to Pakistan.
R K Malviya, the Bajaria police station in-charge said that he has sent the information in written to the Pakistan embassy at least four times in last one year but no response came from there.
He said that he is waiting for the legal formalities to deport him to Pakistan. Till then he will have to remain in custody.
However, Jamila said that his husband is an Indian, born in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. He had wrongly said that he was a Pakistani as he was in drunken state. She said he was born in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh.
