It happened in the public view. Thanks to the photographer who revealed the different picture of society. Otherwise, who cares what happened in the crowd. Shame on the people who did the act.

They might provide evidence to identify the culprits but must have also been embarrassing for her.

It is really unfortunate that not one out of the men surrounding the girl were effected by the girls screams.

We need to understand real issue here ...a Hindu Girl was teased by 70 men ,most of them were muslim..I am sorry now many of us will start shouting ’Communal’ but unfortunate reality in this country is that having kept their women inside houses and under burqa , muslim men out on street chase Hindu women who unfortunately are given more freedom by their society. Unfortunately unlike western countries we neither have any good police ,nor there is any society protection to these women. Believe me, this is just small incidence , I know many muslim whose fulltime business is to stand infront of some colleges pick up some girl , they are so professional and well trained now that you will find new girl with them within a week .

I think Hindus need to understand gravity of this problem. Unfortunately many among us turn blind eye to this as trivial issue and this issue has been never discussed in our society but exploitation of Hindu women by muslims is a reality in this country and we need to do something urgently for this

This is really a inhuman attitude from the so called civilized society. It\’s not the problem of one female but is a threat to the whole feamle group in total. Such type of people should be hanged again and again.And as a Indain I always fear about our so called \”Khaki Bardi wallas\”...They are simply disgusting and hopeless people...completely void of any civic sense..The India gate scenerio on the NEW Year eve is the ultimate truth..

Instead of saying something about this shameful act, you are making it a communal issue. I wonder why people like you can’t take human beings as one than drawing lines of racial and religious discrimination. When god has created us as one, than who are you to divide their misconducts into religious boundaries?

If you are saying that it was Muslim Guys� hand in this incident I would say Hindu guys were no less to stand and witness this shocking act.

If not for the pics, the atrocity would have gone unnoticed just like the Khairlanji massacre. It stirred people only after the pics were out after a month. Images, however shocking, are a great thing even though many might argue that it degrades the honour of the victims like Priyanka Bhotmange of Khairlanji or this Mumbai girl in question.

In a relatively conservative and male dominated country like India, it is the women who are more frustrated than males because males find ways out to release their pent-up frustrations more often than women. Even in martimony, an overwhelming majority males in countries like India are least bothered about female carnal satisfaction once their interests are over.

It is just a personal opinion. I have had wonderful experiences with the Mumbai intelligentsia. It was not intended to hurt the feelings of anyone. A few years back, playwright Victor Banerjee said the same thing and many Mumbaikars did agree with him. So please take it in a light vein.

Sexual frustration is the last reason why men rape women. Rape is used as a method to leave indelible scar in the psyche of the victim, to humilate and also inferiority complex in the male spouses over their wives results in rape within marriages that mostly go unreported. For eg, if a wife earns more than husband and due to this if the husband suffers from inferiority complex, he will \’use\’ rape to show who is the boss. Rape is also used to settle scores, insult and dominate as it happened in the Khairlanji case. I can go on and on various reasons behind rapes but I guess I have put across the point here.

So your theory of sexual frustration being the primary cause of rape is misconstrued. The \’frustration barometer\’ cannot be measured in the number of rapes but in the number of adulteries and clandestine carnal behaviour that are never brought to light. The number of affairs with next-door aunties are definitely more common than the number of rapes.

Jonty, Sexual frustration still remains one of the reasons that prompts rape. Most date rapes are due to sexual frustration.

Consider the cases when women in Delhi have been raped in moving vehicles. No doubt it is all about men wanting to impose their will by force on women.

I feel in a conservative, male dominated country like India this frustration resulted in what happened here. Countless affairs and liaisons for some men never seems to satisfy their lust. They need more and in a nasty way...OOGLING, WOLFWHISTLING, GRABBING BUTTOCKS or PRESSING BREASTS or as in this case wanting a glimopse of the NAKED FLESH!

Seeing your belief that rape is a way to satiate sexual urges, let me disabuse you with certain facts.

First let me inform you about a few off stream facts with respect to our discussion here that might be useful to you in the future. I shall however discuss the main difference between your thoughts and established facts regarding rape being a major reason to let out sexual frustration within men. So read on:

Different countries have different laws on what really constitutes rape and what not. For example in India only forceful penile penetration in vagina can be defined as rape and not forceful buggery or insertion of digits or other objects.

The classic case was the ’rape’ of nurse Aruna Shanbaugh of Mumbai’s KEM Hospital by a wardboy called Sohanlal in November 1973. In the act, Sohanlal choked Aruna with a dogchain for several minutes thus damaging her brain stem rendering her permanently severely disabled, nearly brain dead. She can see, but her brain can’t register what she sees and thus can’t respond. She can’t move her left hand and open her fist. She has been a vegetable for the last 30 years.

Surprisingly, Sohanlal was not convicted of rape but robbery and attempt to murder and served a 7-yr sentence only. (Later on, he managed to join the same hospital as a wardboy, this despite he ruined the life of a young woman who was just about to get married.) Anyway, since tests proved that Sohanlal committed anal penetration, it didn’t amount to rape according to still prevailing laws. [1, Also read this book]

Then there is this Statutory Rape where even if an adult (male or female) indulges in consensual sex with a minor, it would amount to rape. In this case sexual frustration or lust according to your theory for rape may hold ground. Then again, psychiatrists would say that it is sexual perversion and not sexual frustration.

Now, coming back to your theory that sexual frustration in men make them rape. Sohanlal raped Aruna not because of lust, but because she had reported Sohanlal for indulging in petty crimes like pilfering medicines and equipment from the hospital. One night when he saw Aruna changing her clothes after (or for) night shift, he seized the moment to take revenge of his humilation by the way of raping her.

Serial rapists and sex offenders (including pedophiles) are clinical psychopathic cases just like serial killers are. They are mentally deranged; nonetheless criminals not worthy of staying within the society.

Here, you might argue what about the overwhelming number of cases where the offender was known to the victim like a relative, friend or a neighbour. In such cases the constant sighting, proximity etc makes the offender prurient and there comes a time when some people cannot hold back and goes ahead to rape the victim if other advances to lure her into consenting for sex fail. Even here, sexual frustration has nothing to do with rape. It has more to do with ’urge to control’ especially after being spurned earlier by the victim.

’a crime of violence and control’ since the 1970s. According to psychological analysis literature, ”control” is a key feature in most definitions of privacy:

** ”Privacy is not the absence of other people from one’s presence, but the control over the contact one has with them.” (Pedersen, D. 1997).

** ”Selective control of access to the self.” (Margulis, 2003)

Control is important in providing:

a) What we need for normal psychological functioning; b) stable interpersonal relationships; and c) personal development. (Pedersen, D. 1997)

Violation of privacy or ”control” comes in many forms, with sexual assault and the resulting psychological traumas being one of the most explicit forms. Many victims of sexual assault suffer from eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia, which also center around control issues. Therefore, some argue that it makes more sense to look at the issue of sexual assault as an invasion of privacy (Mclean, D. 1995):

The more comfortable a person is with talking about invasion of privacy and in insisting that he or she has privacy that deserves respect, the clearer that person�s understanding of rape will be... Consequently, it is important to be aware of the approach of this subject of rape through the concept of privacy because of the historical background and the need to bypass certain stigmas.

As far as flashing in front of females, catwhistling, groping, buttom pinching and voyeurism as you mentioned is concerned, the reasons can range from fetish, perversion, social circumstances, indifference and/or lack of honour towards females (again arising out of various socio-psychological causes) to downright psycho-criminal behaviour.

Again, it has nothing to do with sexual frustration. It is just like getting a sexual kick appeasing certain withdrawal symptoms in the brain like getting pleasure out of having a drag of cigarette.

Besides, in some societies like Japan, groping is an acceptable social norm and it is rampant in subways, workplaces, public transports etc. In fact, a non-groped female there often finds herself lacking in self esteem. A study in the US showed that 98% of the women groped seldom resist till the very end and out of those 98% females, over 50% respond ’positively’ to the advances of the gropers after a certain time. Then, many of the first time groped females take the same route

where they had been groped just for some harmless sexual kicks. Groping is inherent in the animal kingdom for groping also is a way to check sexual maturity, or whether the female is in heat or not for mating purposes.

Also it has been seen that if a female is being groped by a single or a couple of men, other perfectly ’normal gentlemen’ tend to join as it seems to be the case in the Mumbai incident.

It is not only men grope females, females grope men too. Go to a nightclub and you would know what I am tring to say. I went to a girls hostel a few years back to deliver a parcel to a cousin with a friend. I don’t think I shall be able to

forget the catcalls, lewd comments and other jeers we faced then for the rest of our lives. That was an experience and now whenever I think of it, it brings about a smile in my face.

The coin has an other side too. :-)

In Psychology we have been taught about the concept of perception. In an impulsive society like Mumbai, we may take sexual expliticism as ground and lack of individualistic reconnaissance as a figure template. This is an example of perpetuation of manifold evils of urbanism where people stand indifferent - a sociological pattern developed worldwide and endorsed by international Sociology Conference.

We must vow to raise our voice against such incidents. Forget the encroachment on privacy or liberty or increasing sexual appetite or going for defining rape, its a blatant violation of not only the modesty of the victim but also the whole society. We can’t justify what constitute rape or not rape on the basis of law in different societies, as law is only to control external human behavior that too originated at the twilight stage of custom. What about the internal impulse? Is it not the sense of urge or feeling or motivation ?

Law may not be taken in to cognizance to judge the violation of liberty because of the rising concept of human rights. U v the liberty to wave your hand up to the limit where another’s nose begins (Harold J Laski). Anything that is done against the will of one is an act of perpetuation of violence even if it is accepted by the society n not covered by the law. Cultural differentiations may have the explicit examples but shouldn’t be taken as an absolute justification. It’s the individual who is primary to decide whether to live in state of nature or choose the Leviathan, to go for the platonic communism or the seek salvage in the general will. Not the mob, crowd or law or state can force on us the what constitute against the individual or beneficial when the state is withdrawing itself and individualistic view taking predence over police state.

Irrespective of the definition of ”rape” and what constitutes a rape, this is certainly a physical abuse on an individual.

I agree with Kanchan and Disha on the comment that a communal flavor shouldn’t be given to this episode. This is a felony by a perverted mob.
